As World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick concludes his two-day visit in the country, members of Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) and Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), donned in Halloween costumes, trooped to the Bank’s Manila office, denouncing the Bank as the fount of global corporate greed and the dispossession of the world’s 99 percent, including the Filipino people.

The Freedom from Debt Coalition stated its support for government’s imposition of taxes on the controversial Poverty Eradication and Alleviation Certificates (PEACe) government bonds set to be paid today, October 18, as current bond holders, mostly banks, filed a petition before the Supreme Court contesting the decision.

In a society where women are mostly in-charge of managing the household budget, higher electricity rates mean additional burdens and deeper indebtedness for Filipino women, especially those who already find it hard to make ends meet. Members of the Freedom from Debt Coalition – Women’s Committee picketing the office of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in Ortigas Center, sent this message to oppose an impending new wave of electricity rate hikes.

House inquiry on PEACe Bonds smacks of “lutong makaw” PDF Print E-mail

Early this week,  we were informed that the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability  was about to  formalize  its Report on its Inquiry into the controversial Poverty Eradication and Alleviation Certificates or PEACe Bonds.  A copy of this Report now being circulated among Committee members for signing shows that the House Committee will come out with two findings – that the issuance of the PEACe Bonds was regular and conformed to prescribed procedures, and that the Philippine Government obtained a fair and reasonable value from the proceeds of the sale of the PEACe Bonds.

Congress asked to suspend interest for “corrupted debts” in 2012 budget PDF Print E-mail

On the last few days of the budget committee hearings, a debt watchdog has asked the House Committee on Appropriations to follow President Benigno S. Aquino III’s example by suspending interest payments for “corrupted debts and deals” in the proposed 2012 national government budget.
