|FDC-Iloilo to City Officials: Stop cuddling PECO abuses|
|Tuesday, 06 July 2010 00:00|
ILOILO, Philippines - The Freedom from Debt Coalition here has renewed its call by urging the City Government to stop cuddling the abuses of Panay Electric Company (PECO) and instead make immediate steps in addressing high electricity rates and its worsening service delivery.
Data shared by the FDC-Iloilo reveal that residential consumers consuming a monthly average of 220-kWh shell out P12.20 per kilowatt-hour or are paying monthly electricity amounting to P2,684.00.
Among the charges, the generation charge or the amount that goes to PECO’s independent power producer Panay Power Corporation eats up most at P8.12 per kilowatt-hour.
This alone has put Iloilo City in the country’s map as having the most expensive electricity compared to Manila and other key metropolitan cities in the archipelago, FDC-Iloilo said.
The group said that electricity consumers expressed disgust not only on the expensive electricity they are paying but also on the unannounced power interruptions in five different districts in the city.
“This is the worst service we could receive from a power distribution utility governed under the era of performance-based regulation,” said FDC-Iloilo.
“Adding insult to injury are the deafening silence on the part of the newly elected city officials led by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Vice-Mayor Jose Espinosa III which truly puzzles the minds of the consumers especially that no steps have been undertaken until this time,” said Ted Aldwin Ong, secretary-general of FDC-Iloilo.
“I believe we need to remind our key leaders of the city to make good with their promises to consumers that they will aggressively act on the power problem of the city’ under PECO and PPC once they officially assume office after the May polls,” stressed Ong.
Ong further underscored that “the unwillingness of both Mayor Mabilog and Vice-Mayor Espinosa III in confronting the power problem of the city under PECO during their previous terms of office still serves as a chilling reminder of its deliberate disregard to protect consumers from the historical abuses and monopolistic practices of PECO.”
“We are challenging the leadership of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Vice-Mayor Jose Espinosa III to listen to the call of the consumers demanding immediate action on PECO’s expensive electricity and the utility’s abusive practices by putting it on top of its priority,” said FDC-Iloilo. (30)
