 Consumers from 55 cities and municipalities from 15 provinces and 10 regions, led by the Freedom from Debt Coalition, staged a national day of action through various forms of protest and urged Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III and Congress, specifically the members of the Joint Congressional Power Commission, to create a roadmap to address the problems besetting the power industry and affecting ordinary consumers.

 Instead of reviving the monstrous Laiban Dam project, the government should consider the following options: first, the promotion of water conservation instead of projecting increased water consumption; second, the continuation of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction or water loss of the two MWSS concessionaires, namely Maynilad and Manila Water; and, third, a comprehensive exploration of small-scale surface water development projects.

 The Freedom from Debt Coalition responds to the editorial of Philippine Daily Inquirer, entitled “Unnecessary delays” (11/13/12), which criticized FDC and its co-petitioners for asking the Supreme Court to reconsider the sale of the Angat hydroelectric power plant (Ahepp) to a foreign-owned corporation Korea Water (K-Water). This Op-Ed piece was published by the Inquirer in its 27 November 2012 issue.

 Thousands of electricity consumers from 55 cities and municipalities from 15 provinces and 10 regions are expected to stage a multi-form protest on November 22, dubbed as “National Day of Action against Epira, high electricity rates and privatization of the power industry.” Consumers will also stage “Occupy Meralco” in various branches, including the main office, of the distribution company in the National Capital Region at exactly 10:00 AM on Thursday.
